Carrying a Little Extra:A Guide to Healthy Pregnancy for the Plus-Size Woman by Paula Bernstein![]() Click here to purchase! The purpose of this book is to optimize chances for a healthy pregnancy and delivery for women who struggle with their weight. It is not another diet book. Our goals are to provide women with accurate medical information about the increased risks so that they can be aware and informed, and to suggest sensible, achievable nutritional strategies, before, during and after pregnancy. We want to help mothers gain enough weight for a healthy baby, while avoiding the risks of excessive pounds. This book is organized in two parts; obstetrical information, and nutritional information. The first half of the book discusses what current research tells us about overweight and explains how weight affects fertility. It reviews the medical evidence for increased risk during pregnancy, labor and delivery, and postpartum, and explains in simple terms the nature of the medical problems and how they are managed The second half of the book presents strategies for healthy eating. It explains the nutritional requirements of pregnancy and how they vary depending upon the woman’s starting weight. Diet plans and menus are presented for use during pregnancy, for breast feeding, and postpartum weight loss. The special requirements of women who become diabetic in the course of pregnancy will also be reviewed. This book is a professional collaboration between two skinny dietitians and one unabashedly overweight obstetrician. Between us we have close to seventy-five years of experience in helping women to have healthy pregnancies. It is our hope that it will serve as a resource for women who are carrying a little extra, and who are motivated to make their pregnancies as healthy as possible.
